Tanzania: Medical Drugs Unleash Side Effects

By Fatma Abdu

Patients and health workers have been asked to provide information on the side effects of medical drugs in order to simplify its control and protecting public health for the benefit of all.

Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA) Communication and public relations Manager Ms Gaudensia Semwanza said that many side effects of medications may not be reported due to lack of awareness and education to the communities.

"Information on the effects of drugs should be provided by health workers in order to improve the health of communities in the country.

We call upon members of the public and health providers to ensure they share information in order to protect the health of the wananchi," Ms Semwanza said. Ms Semwanza pointed out that TFDA has received information on the effects of medical drugs from health workers.

She said that TFDA will provide such information through various social media including blogs, whatsApp, and mobile phones in order to inform the public on the safety and quality of medical drugs. She reported that the use of sub-standard and counterfeit products may cause many side effects to consumers, including death, a situation that will be sad to relatives, friends and the nation whose economy will be undermined.
